Gene Hyde, Head of Special Collections and University Archivist

Gene Hyde has served as Head of Special Collections and University Archivist at UNC Asheville since 2013, coming to UNC Asheville from Radford University where he was University Archivist and Appalachian Collection Librarian. His education includes a BA in History from UNC Greensboro, an MA in Appalachian Studies from Appalachian State University, and an MS in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee. His research interests include the history of Appalachian archival collections and the role of Appalachian Special Collections in curricular support and undergraduate research. Ashley Whittle, Assistant Archivist, Special Collections Assistant

Ashley McGhee Whittle has served as Assistant Archivist and Special Collections Assistant since 2019. Prior to that she worked in the archives at the Biltmore Estate and as the administrative assistant in the UNC Asheville History Department. She brings a love of regional history and a passion for helping students to the job. She is a 2016 graduate of the UNC Asheville History Department with her BA in History and a 2022 graduate of UNC Greensboro with her Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS).
