Biographical Note

Edward Elmer Brown was an Asheville photographer who was hired as a photographer by the Western N.C. railroad in the 1880s. After settling in Asheville he owned a photography business with Thomas H. Lindsey (“Lindsey & Brown”) that was active in the early 1890s, according to Asheville city directories.

Biographical sketch submitted by Eleanore Brown, E. E. Brown’s granddaughter:

“Edward Elmer Brown was a native of Ohio. He and his wife moved to Harrisonburg, VA, where he earned his living as a photographer. He was hired by the Western N. C. Railroad to take a series of photos of the Western N. C. mountains when the railroad was completed.

He and his wife like Asheville and built a large home at 34 Oak Street across from the David Millard Jr. High School.

Mr. Brown developed a florist business behind his house and later moved the greenhouse to Murdock Avenue to a larger piece of land. His son, Elmo L. Brown, moved to a small house near the greenhouse.

Mr. Brown retired from the business and sold it to Middlemount Florist. He and his wife then began spending the winters in St. Petersburg, FL, and built a cabin in Pisgah Forest for summer use.

He died about 1933 and was buried in Lewis Memorial Park in Asheville.”
