Biographical Information
Eula Mae Massey Shaw was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, in 1946. She dedicated over forty years to education as an African American educator. Eula began her education at Mount Tabor AME Zion School, where she attended the first and second grades, walking nearly three miles to school each day. In the third grade, she took the bus to Barr Street Elementary School in the city. Eula graduated from Barr Street High School in 1964.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from South Carolina State University in 1968 and, in 1975, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In 2002, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards recognized her as a National Board-Certified Teacher. Throughout her career, she taught in Lancaster, South Carolina, Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Asheville, North Carolina, and also served as an adjunct professor in the education department at UNC Asheville.
