Historical Information note

The Men’s Garden Club of Asheville was founded in 1940 by Bill Krause, a florist who gathered several dozen men together to form the Men’s Garden Club, which was chartered with the Men’s Garden Clubs of America. For the first 19 years the Club hosted a flower show in the Asheville city auditorium that attracted 500 exhibitors. During World War II the members promoted Victory Gardens and created a 3 acre Victory Garden on the corner of Norwood and Murdock Avenues.  In 1943 they founded the Seed Pod newsletter to discuss their activities. The Club has been involved in numerous beautification projects in Asheville and has actively encouraged gardening and science through programs with local elementary schools. Working with local agencies and groups, the Club erected a greenhouse in 2001 to grow plants for an annual plant sale, and the funds have supported scholarships for local students interested in horticulture. The Club remains active as of 2022.
