Bibliographical Information note

Margaret Shook (1930-2018) was born in Detroit Michigan and graduated from Wayne State University. She married Dr. Earl Shook in 1953 and moved to Asheville in the mid 1950s. Drawing on her love of photography and writing, Shook established Market Media in Asheville, where she provided photographic and advertising services to many Asheville businesses from the 1960s until the early 2000s. Shook had a passion for local history and collected materials relating to Asheville’s history and the history of the surrounding areas. As well as her business, Shook was appointed a Commissioner of the Buncombe County Housing Authority and participated in many local clubs and organizations in Asheville.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains personal materials from Margaret Shook’s life, professioanl materials relating to the operation of Market Media, and materials related to several local projects. The collection includes photographs, slides, newspapers, negatives, pamphlets, papers, vhs tapes, reel to reel tapes and USB drives.

Shook’s Market Media’s clients included Grove Park Inn, Delta Airlines, Dave Steel, St Joseph’s Hospital, the Asheville Chamber of Commerce, and a number of local hotels. Correspondence, project drafts, and examples of finished projects are included for these businesses and more.

The collection also includes two local history projects. The first used Shook’s photos of Asheville urban scenes paired with relevant quotes from Thomas Wolfes’ novel Look Homeward Angel. The project sought to preserve many of these landmarks as Wolfe had seen them before they were changed by a rapidly growing and changing Asheville. The second project examines the Mace craftsmen family, including the family’s ties to the history of Madison County and WNC during the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Included in the collection are items relating to the organization and contents of both of these projects.
