Biographical Note
Dr. Dwight Mullen taught Political Science at UNC Asheville from 1984 until his retirement in 2018. In addition to leading efforts to desegregate UNC Asheville’s faculty in the 1980s, developing the African-American Colloquium for incoming UNC Asheville students, and developing the popular State of Black Asheville project and classes, Dr. Mullen was extremely active in the Asheville community. The materials in the Dwight Mullen Personal Papers help document some of his community activities and awards.
Scope and Contents
The Dwight Mullen Personal Papers contains materials documenting Dr. Mullen’s extensive work with various community groups in Asheville. Included are materials related to his work with the YMI Cultural Center, Pack Place, Eagle-Market Street Development, and other groups. Also included are personal documents, book reviews, newspaper articles by Dr. Mullen, awards, and other materials. Note that his work with the State of Black Asheville is a separate collection.
Arrangement
Box 1 contains materials related to Dr. Mullen’s work with the YMI Cultural Center and Pack Place. Box 2 contains materials on YMI programs, various community organizations and forums, and criminal justice issues. Box 3 contains papers, reviews, talks, notes, and other documents written by Dwight Mullen, as well as awards, family narratives, and other documents.
