Hart provides an annotated survey and anecdotes about a number early works on Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia, including Horace Kephart’s Our Southern Highlanders, Christian Reid’s The Land of the Sky, John C. Campbell’s The Southern Highlander and His Homeland, Emma Bell Miles’ The Spirit of the Mountains, books on the experience of women living in the Smokies, books on logging in the Smokies, and other works on Western North Carolina.
This video was filmed in the Hart’s personal library prior to donating the collection to UNC Asheville’s Special Collections. The books in the Bill and Alice Hart Collection are shelved in the same order as in the Hart’s marvelous personal library.
