[Description of item], Carolina Mountain Club Archive, D.H. Ramsey Library, Special Collections, University of North Carolina Asheville.
Historical Information
The Carolina Mountain Club (CMC) was established in Asheville, North Carolina on July 16, 1923 The focus of the Club is on hiking, building and maintaining trails, and promoting conservation.
Three officers of the club were instrumental in retaining core club records and for building the Club’s history. Jerome Dykeman, as CMC Historian took on the task of organizing the records in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1960s and on the death of Dykeman in 1973, Eloise Whitson, the Secretary/Treasurer continued the retention and organization of the records until her death in 1992. In addition to the record-keeping responsibilities of these two officers, Arch Nichols, a member, maintained meticulous files. Mr. Nichols was active in the Club from the 1940s, until his death in 1989.
Since CMC never had a physical office, the club’s records have been relocated throughout its history. The full details of these relocations have not been documented. During the 1990s, CMC records were transferred from CMC club president to president, but in 1998, CMC president, Howard McDonald, retained the collection after his term ended, and provided stewardship of the materials. In October 2002, club historian Pete Steurer acquired the records from Mr. McDonald, and began to the process of organizing the collection for presentation to UNC Asheville.
Scope and Contents
Contains administrative, financial and membership information on the Carolina Mountain Club from the founding of the club in 1923, until very recent years. There are extensive records of hikes undertaken, with details of dates, weather, routes, hike leaders, and hikers.
The conservation work undertaken by the club is described in trail maintenance records, including projects undertaken on the Appalachian Trail, and with National Parks and Forests.
Photographs of hikes and conservation work undertaken by the club are included, as are numerous maps, trails guides and other publications related to hiking and conservation, primarily in the Appalachian region.
Custodial History and Arrangement
CMC historian Pete Steurer acquired the club records in 2002. He determined that, due to the frequent movement of the records as well as the document searches that occurred over the years by CMC members and guests, any original order had been lost. The records were therefore grouped into a series of broad classifications of similar items, and arranged chronologically within theses series. The collection was then donated to UNC Asheville in December 2002, and forms the bulk of materials in boxes 1 through 37 of the collection.
In 2002, Howard McDonald donated materials related to George Masa, including his estate, memorial, and the naming of Masa Knob. These are collected in Box 38.
A further donation was received in 2004, comprising books, maps and looseleaf binders from Ed Dunn. These generally seem to have been assimilated into the collection, with the exception of ‘South Beyond 6000’ records.
Two further containers of materials were received in 2009. These materials included photographs, documents, publications, clippings, issues of “Lets Go!”, historical narratives, and the Tennent slide collection. It is believed that documents related to identified series were merged with previous accessions, while other documents were identified as ‘addendum files.”
In 2013 and 2015, Rocko Smucker, who was then CMC historian, donated further materials. Also in 2015, CMC member Walt Weber donated miscellaneous materials including Dick Roberts papers and documents from Weber’s Buck Spring Lodge project.
In November 2017, two binders of early hike reports were received from CMC Historian Stuart English, and were added to Box 15
Additional materials were received from Stuart English in December 2017. These are generally in Box 56, with the exception of two articles about George Masa which were added to Box 38 and a monograph which was cataloged. 2018 “Let’s Go” hike reports, and the 2019 Operation Manaual were received from Stuart English in February 2019. Additional materials were received from Danny Bernstein in 2021-22.
