Historical Information
The Asheville Global Report (AGR) was a volunteer-run newspaper with a weekly circulation of 3000. It was distributed free at locations around Buncombe County and surrounding areas from 1999 to 2007. The AGR’s mission statement was to “cover news underreported by mainstream media, believing that a free exchange of information is necessary to organize for social change.” The AGR covered a broad range of topics, including race, gender, equality, labor, war, the environment and media, providing an independent view of the political scene in early 2000s Asheville. The AGR culled articles from a variety of places, including traditional and alternative regional, national, and international news outlets. It also included articles and reports on regional topics written by local writers. The AGR received numerous awards, including the American Civil Liberties Union’s “champion of civil liberties” award and 10 Project Censored awards. The AGR also produced a television show and radio program until 2011. The AGR closed in 2007 citing difficulties in maintaining the grassroots publication.
